The office of J. Robert Anderson took on the task of re-imagining the gardens surrounding this historic home turned western art museum. Our challenge was to respect and compliment the formal structure of the existing building and hardscape elements while introducing elements of the western character exemplified in the museum’s art collection. We used native grasses and perennials in formal arrangements to provide a strong structure for the gardens, anchoring the plantings with iconic western plants such as yucca and prickly pear. The courtyard was converted into an outdoor sculpture gallery to draw visitors into the gardens.
